BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS DESCRIPTION:

————————————————————————————————————————–

I have designed a Beginning and Intermdiate class in which you will learn photography theory, as well as use a camera in class.  You do not need to have a camera to take the class.  However, many students do buy a camera after a few classes, as they develop a better understanding of what features they would like in their new camera.

Both classes are for the student of photography who wants to understand the basic concepts of lighting, exposure, composition, etc., in order to take a great picture.

Throughout the Beginning and Intermediate Class we will also cover how to photograph people (making them feel at ease), headshots for actors, publicity pictures for artists and musicians, fine art photography and portraits.  In addition we will talk about general landscape picture taking as well as commercial photography.  To wrap up the intermediate class we will talk about the basic methods of marketing your work.

ABOUT THE TEACHER

When I was a child, my dad and his family were absolutely obsessed with taking photos. It was very funny, during family gatherings my dad would take pictures of anyone in the family in several poses.  My mother thougth it was all a bit too much, but in any case, something great came out of all of it.  I learned about composition, colors and details pretty young, and I practiced taking pictures a lot.  I just loved having a camera in my hands.

By the time I got to college I was doing pics for fellow artists who needed promo pics and who liked my first photography portfolio.  I was able to start my portfolio through my photo and film classes that I took as electives for my advertising degree from the Ohio State School of Journalism.  By the time I graduated with my Master’s degree in Telecommunication Arts (film and video production) I realized that people would pay me money to take their pics, and I thank my husband for that, as he encouraged me to go into business for myself for the first time. And so  I did a lot of promo pics for singers, bands and actors in New York City during the times when digital photography did not exist (it was all film).  I also learned a lot about headshots when I worked for Video Portfolios, a video company in the Big Apple that specializes in shooting castings for major commercial accounts, such as Elizabeth Arden and Calvin Klein, and which also videotapes castings for network and cable TV shows. I worked for them as a videographer and learned a lot through the headshots that came into the casting process. I also learned through my modeling experience (hair shows for Jean Paul Mitchell, in house modeling for department stores, John Casablancas Modeling School training, John Robert Powers-as an instructor, etc).  My professional acting classes in LA rounded up my training as well.  Later on, I used my photography skills to boost my sales for my vacation home business in Las Vegas, my own band’s promotional materials as well as our theatres’ promo pics and posters.

These days I think I’m happiest shooting artsy subjects, and I will try to do calendars that capture that vision.
