A walk down the Strip
August 30, 2008
…the mode of human sense perception changes with humanity’s entire mode of existence.
Walter Benjamin
We are chasing the blue dragon. Fifteen feet ahead of us there is a large disheveled woman wearing a blue nylon dress, the back of which is covered from her waist down with a brown stain. Her feet hit the ground hard with slow uneven steps. People laugh as they walk by then cry because the smell of her makes their eyes water. We are walking under the awnings of a construction site that will soon, maybe in a few years, be the City Center. For now we are trapped behind her and the smell lingers and we want to pass but there simply isn’t enough room to go around and we don’t want to touch her or even talk to her to say excuse me. So we walk slowly at her lopsided pace. [Read more]

Jumper Film Review
May 9, 2008
There were a few reviews saying that this movie was disappointing, but I actually enjoyed it and it’s one of my favorite films of 2008. Apparently director Doug Liman has a great reputation for directing movies such as Swingers, Go and The Bourne Identity but it’s not until now that I have seen one of this movies. Hayden Christensen, who plays Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels, plays David Rice, who has the special power of teleporting himself anywhere he pleases. Samuel L. Jackson is a paladin, a group who wants to kill people with teleporting powers and who has declared war to those born with this ability. Jamie Bell, a fellow jumper, who is also persecuted by Jackson’s clan, spends a good time of his time trying to keep away those who want to kill him as well. Liman’s pace and his action shots were impressive to me. Overall, the script was fun and quick yet it had focus.
Liman has a great sense of rhythm and the narrative of the story was very satisfying to me, The scope isn’t overly ambitious, and so he is able to deliver a good story and well built relationships for his characters. I thought all of the actors were well cast, and I am looking forward to a sequel. As I can see by the box office success of Jumper, I’m not the only one.
